Rating metrics: Help Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)

This album is rated in the top 2% of all albums on BestEverAlbums.com. This album has a Bayesian average rating of 78.1/100, a mean average of 77.5/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 78.2/100. The standard deviation for this album is 14.3.

I have always rated this album very highly in Bowie's canon, though there've been plenty of demurrals. It was meant to be a straight musical of 1984, but the Orwell estate wouldn't give him the rights to the material - presumably because they predicted Eurythmics ten years hence in the very year depicted. So Bowie reinvented it as a dystopian fantasy of his own, gave an elegant two-fingered salute to literary snobbery and produced a musically exciting, lyrically disturbing world in which NOT ONE element is misplaced or extraneous, and which features the last outing on a Bowie album of stellar pianist Mike Garson at his effervescent, effortless best. So there!

Underrated in the Bowie discography for some reason, it does have some tough competition against the likes of Ziggy and Hunky Dory. It possesses the great single in Rebel Rebel, really one of Bowie's best for me, it also has some great album tracks like We Are The Dead, which is again, an overlooked brilliant track with some great lyrics. Sweet Thing is another track that never seems to get a mention.

'We'll buy some drugs and watch a band,
Then jump in the river holding hands.'

When I first heard this album I wasn't that keen on it. But after further listens, I now think it is an absolute masterpiece.Such a strange album.
Sweet Thing,Candidate,Sweet Thing (Reprise) and We Are The Dead are my favorite tracks.

Diamond dogs, was originally meant to be a musical version of 1984, but due to publishing rights not being available to him Bowie had to knock it on the head. In it's place is, diamond dogs. Is it a musical concept? I have no idea. It makes no sense to me. Still, it's a good record, although personally, I think it's his weakest original material release of the seventies. The title track is a good Rolling Stones pastiche, and, rebel, rebel, is one of the great Bowie singles, and really the last of his glam rock numbers. Elsewhere, there's the nice, rock and roll with me, and the sweet thing/candidate, is good, but as a concept, if that's what it is, it simply doesn't work. Still, it is seventies Bowie, so it's still essential.
