Rating metrics: Help Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)

This album is rated in the top 4% of all albums on BestEverAlbums.com. This album has a Bayesian average rating of 76.5/100, a mean average of 75.3/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 76.7/100. The standard deviation for this album is 15.7.

A very beautiful and delicate composition that is packed full of emotion. The gentle guitar work is phenomenal and makes this album such a personal experience and allows us to connect with the artist so easily. This is aided as well by the lyrics which are so open and honest. It feels so clean and well produced making for a smooth experience and really easy listening for the whole album. Getting wrapped up in this album is inevitable and once it happens you will become so relaxed which is all down to the atmosphere created. Overall, it is stunning to listen to this album unfold with each listen and well worth a listen especially if you want to chill.

Strangely enough, I like the albums that bookend this one a little better. Creek Drank the Cradle was of course amazing in its lo-fi beauty, and Shepards Dog took full advantage of the powers of the recording studio while maintaining Beam's intimate songwriting. This album stands on an awkward middle ground, that sometimes eschews the strengths of the aforementioned two, other times combining them into some of his best songs ever. Naked As We Came, Sunset Soon Forgotten, Sodom South Georgia, and Passing Afternoon are all some of the greatest songs of his career, and some I would contend stand in the running for greatest folk songs ever. Others seem to fall flat. Not terribly; they are still enjoyable songs, but they just don't compare. And something about the track listing just feels off. It gives the album an overly-scattered feel. But overall, its a beautiful album, one who's highs are impossible to ignore.

This is a truly beautifully poetic album. It is like a more polished version of The Creek Drank The Cradle and is only ranked slightly lower in my All-Time list due to the esteem in which I hold his debut album's stripped back lo-fi intimacy.

A nice album. Nice for singing along, or as the cover shows, just laying the grass and relaxing to.
