Their best album. Gorgeous. Gorgeous. Gorgeous. On this one Simon has finally reached his peak as an arranger and composer (maybe not as a lyricist, but not a big problem) and Garfunkel and him sing these songs with pastoral youthful emotion. There's an emotional arc to almost every song, and the instrumental pallete is always mysterious but soothing. "Homeward Bound" and "The 59th Street Bridge Song" are pop at its purest and most charming level. Must listen. (Edited)

Very good album.
Can't help mentioning the arrangement of the traditional Scarborough Fair wich I think is one of the highest moments in recorded pop/rock history.

Another classic from Simon and Garfunkel.
The first five tracks are perfect, and afterwards, the album still has some great songs, but the first five tracks play off as perfect, and then we go into overall greatness, but not perfection.
Still, this is a very good album!

Obviously, bridge over troubled water, is the most famous and successful Simon and Garfunkel album, and quite rightly gets a lot of praise, but personally, this is my favourite S&G record. It's got a great feel for the time and place, both lyrically and musically. It protests against the older generation, of accepted domesticity, and alienation. There are some of Paul Simon's greatest songs here from, homeward bound, patterns, and, for Emily. There's also, Scarborough fair, feelin 'groovy, and the humorous, a simple desultory phillipic. I actually prefer the lesser known tracks here to the more well known ones. The album ends with the haunting, 7o'clock news/silent night. An excellent record.

Songs "scarborough fair..." and "homeward bound" are reassuringly beautiful. "flowers never bend with the rainfall" and "the big bright green pleasure machine" stand out with their energy and tongue-in-cheek lyrics in the case of "pleasure machine". The energy and cheekiness of "pleasure machine" carries into "the 59th street bridge song". "the dangling conversation" makes me think they were the folkie vampire weekend of their time with their dangling conversations, concern for theater and angie dickenson. "for emily..." is kind of a clunker, but the rest of the album is Tnotch.
