Fastest Wide-Eyed Implement by Razorblade Smile

Early 90's noise-pop which includes a lovely cover of McCarthy's Rec Sleeping Beauty

Good to see this getting discovered all those years later. They were based in Newcastle and we used to go and watch them around the time I stared to play in bands. They were a bit of an inspiration. The fact that they used to have stuff out on vinyl and get played by Peel was impressive too. This is a good record but keep an eye out for the two 7"s which are great. Not too long ago I completed my collection of their output by getting a sugarfrost compilation which is quite decent indie pop and shoegaze ish. Jigsaw put out a retrospective of all their recordings a couple of years ago which is the easy way to get hear all the stuff. Pete Dale the main bloke started Slampt records who "discovered" kenickie (Lauren Lavern).

Yes I used to have that Sugarfrost compilation...think it was called the birth of true (something like that anyway). It had some good Japanese Shoegaze on it if I remember. There was another band from Newcastle (I think) who I really liked around that time, again just releasing a handful of 7" singles. They were called 'The Sunflowers' and released stuff on Tea Time and Clawfist records.

Two for today:

Perverted By Language by The Fall

Original UK Rough Trade

African Dub All-Mighty, Chapter 3 by Joe Gibbs And The Professionals

Original UK press on Lightning Records - to replace my crappy repress which I've slung on Gumtree and Discogs. Only a fiver too - bargain

That's the one, it's decent. Yes the sunflowers were well known locally but I think they were finished around the time I started going to see local bands and I must have just missed out on seeing them. I've got their singles and they had some good stuff. Im surprised that Jigsaw haven't issued a comp for them. I've seen tim gane mention them in an interview as they played shows with them. The sunflowers are featured on a good indie pop compilation of tracks from the Gateshead label Woosh (which was run by someone who lived in the next street from me, though i had no idea) called Ten Little Records, again on Jigsaw, worth checking. I've no association with Jigsaw by the way but they're the place to get all your obscure early 90s indie that was made in the north east, it seems!

Finally picked up oknotok on black vinyl and tested my new beyerdynamic headphones. Impressive. Let Down being a massive stand out, it sounds mind blowing on this version.

Blimey I'd forgotten all about the label Woosh, I used to have a Flexi disc by Strawberry Story which I picked up at a Sarah gig...it was pretty much impossible not to end up with a handful of Flexi's and fanzines at these gigs by the end of the night from (even) smaller indie-pop labels. I guess it was the best way for labels like Woosh and Heaven to sell their stock...go straight to your target audience rather than wait for them to find you.

Regards to Jigsaw thanks for the nod as it was a shop/label I was not aware of. I just want to go and live in Seattle now!!! Quite a few CD's I'd like to get from them...Razorblade Smile, Bulldozer Crash, Driscolls & Strawberry Story to name a few.

The very early 90s was such a great time for tiny indie labels, most no doubt inspired by the likes of Sarah and Creation. I would hear loads of great noisy indie pop all the time on peel and have no idea who they were but would be quality pop tracks. This jigsaw guy seems to be hoovering up all these obscure acts from that time that have been forgotten. They definitely got plenty worth checking.
