Oh how the great progressive acts of the 70s all seemed to go the same route come the 80s.. Bands like Yes and Genesis reaching the height of their careers by turning to more accessible music.

King Crimson did the same.. Or did they?

Of the 3 albums released in the 80s, Discipline seems to get the most attention and I have no doubt that it will win the above poll. However these 3 albums are all worth checking out in my opinion. As far as prog rock goes for the 80s (at least for these 70s bands, of course neo-prog was thriving..), these are some great additions to anyone's collection. And if you're a younger cat trying to get into the vast world of prog rock, or at least King Crimson, I might actually suggest starting with an album like Discipline before going deeper into their earlier work. I only say this because it may be more accessible to the younger crowd and won't be as intimidating as some of their earlier stuff. But PLEASE DO check out their back catalogue if you haven't!

I'll go against the grain here and pick Three of a Perfect Pair (a phrase which could actually be used to describe this thread!)

Great pick. That's the album that got me to create this thread. I was spinning it all day and loving it, but it made me realize that it is extremely underrated (or forgotten) compared to Discipline.

I'm just getting into King Crimson. Discipline was the only 80's album I've listened to thus far, and I liked it a lot. Three of a perfect pair is next on my "albums to listen to list"

For new fans, what would you suggest are the best albums to dive into?

Discipline and Three of a Perfect Pair are both great, I’m choosing the latter cause to me it stood the test of time better

Three of a Perfect Pair's probably my favorite due to the more experimental second side that functions almost as a suite. Discipline's probably the more consistent album. "The Sheltering Sky" is my favorite track. Beat's a little beat.

Crimson's sound changed a lot from 1969 to their hiatus in 1975. Court of the Crimson King's their most popular (one of the first fully-evolved prog albums). For me, "21st Century Schizoid Man" is the best song Crimson ever did and the best thing to come out of prog period. After that I like the Bruford-Wetton period best:

Larks' Tongues in Aspic
Red (the highest charting album of this period on BEA)
Starless and Bible Black

All of these sound quite a bit different than 80s Crimson.

Pleasantly surprised to see how well Three Of A Perfect Pair has done. Love it.
