I liked this considerably more than the (imo) hyped Since I Left You. Learning what it took to make Since I Left You gives a little more respect to the album, but the music is meh at best for me. This on the other hand is as warm and beautiful as it's cover.

So, this is at least the fourth album from Tom Waits that I have listen to. And while I do love Mercury's passion, I wouldn't ever say he was an absolute favorite for me. Now before you chase me, I do understand the hype. Especially when people mention he is quite eccentric as well as a weird individual in a music context. But I wouldn't say his weirdness was ever the hugest selling point for me. I enjoyed Rain Dogs but wasn't a mind blowing record for me. For 1985 yes. But now, eh. Mule Variations was an album I loved on my first listen. Gave it a 100 and felt it was a runner up for 1999. But then gave it a relisten due to my greatest chart and in ended up being a drop out album. Still great and a worthwhile listen. Now we get to this. And I would say it is around the range of Rain Dogs for me. Enjoyed my time and shares those Isms that make Waits a unique artist. But never hits this middle ground like.... Ween or Mr Bungle. Or doesn't make me drop my jaw like early 2000's Autechre. Was there anything you loved from Waits? Yeah it's One From The Heart. But I do feel like there is a main Tom Waits album I will get at some point. Grade:80

Well this is absolutely fantastic! So uplifting, so gorgeous, and so groovy. The sax work is so gorgeously melodic, the bass and drum work is so earcatching and rock solid. Love the whole vibe and the music. I am not sure what else to say but man I really am excited to listen to other work by these musicians.

Fuck Art by The Dirty Nil
I've seen this album in early January with not so glaring reviews, would've skipped it if not for Gowi's rec. You've heard of pop punk, now get ready for... pop metal? It's just pop punk with more metallic riffs I guess. That was also the best part of the whole album. When the vintage metal riff pops up here and there like on Doom Boy or Ride or Die I'm like "yeah this is gonna be awesome" but then it just isn't. Not that it's bad, but the songwriting's so-so, the vocals are meh and overall this is a run-of-the-mill pop punk album except that it goes hard at times. Still a lot of fun, in fact it's way more fun than expected. It has no right to be this cool despite being kinda average on most fronts. Glad I didn't miss it after all, it's gonna land in the middle of 2021 chart. 6.5/10
Edit: forgot to mention the cover doggo, (s)he's cool.

This was ghreat. Continuing a recent trend in my music takes, this is another pretty straightforward pop album tyhat I just kinda loved. It was just that nice pop that is super catchy and bouncy but also sometimes a little serious and somber, but without overdoing. Its just really solid.
Some of the songs like "Pang", "So Hot You're Hurting My Feelings" and especially "Door" and especially especially "Hit Me Where It Hurts" are perfect pop songs for the ages. Just a really cool and assured debut.

So the last time I venture through Mercury Rev was when I decided to venture through 2001. That has been at least 2 years ago. So I can't per say remember the 01 album. Though I gave it a decent 8. Now this album on the other hand was way better. It felt like the weirdness complimented the entertaining as well as quite exciting music. Like I feel like I am down playing this album but I could see this being higher up in the canon list but also on my official list of 1993. Maybe I should go back to there 01 album to see if I enjoy it more. Grade:95

It kinda reminds me of jpop and weezer had a baby in the 2010s - grasping desperately to be hip BUT I still liked it somehow... hehe. Like genuinely fell for some of the more sugary parts for sure. I unfortunately got a tryhard vibe which typically turns me off. I think had this been an EP with the best bits though, I'd be definitely wanting more. Dump was kinda a dump for example. I also struggle when I find an artist where I'd rather just listen to the artist I already like for certain energy types. Like I love R.E.M. very very much for example -Gowi shows me this band that basically sounds like like them and I just can't.

This is a fun party album with very good funk production throughout from Sylvia Robinson. Pretty much everything is danceable and upbeat. The rapping is solid enough, but none of it is nearly as entertaining as Rapper's Delight, and their Showdown with The Furious Five doesn't quite live up to its potential. In any case, the record is infectious, and I would give it a 3.5 to match their debut if not for the hit single Apache. The beat is dope, but the rest of the song is very racist, filled with war whoops and lyrics about Native American stereotypes. That knocks the album down to a 3/5.

2. Since it's my chart, I'll take it from the top. I rate this album much higher than most (looks like it only has a 72 from the community). Bright electronic pop with darker lyrics that are largely about his struggles with bipolar. An exception is the first song and biggest single, which is not written from his own perspective, but from that of a character.
