the second i pushed play and heard those acoustic chords a wave of recognition and warmth washed over me. I HAVE heard this and many times but somehow I had forgotten how great it is. I love this album, truly. Some of the coolest guitar work, rhythm parts, melodies and vocal harmonies I've heard. Masterpiece through and through. Not much else to say, its just a fantastic album. I did a new comb through of all the top albums to see if any I rated needed to be revisited. I found just a few that, while I have heard them, its just been soooo long and I have no real clear opinion. So I removed my grades. The top 6 are those albums I must newly tackle. "Must" is wrong word... these are ones I feel I should revisit.
1. Mezzanine by Massive Attack/1998/RYM #104 all time album (I have owned this album for ages. One of the first albums I went and bought when I was a budding music nerd. But its been a long time.)
2. Clube da Esquina by Milton Nascimento & Lô Borges/1972/RYM #121 all time album (One of those albums that has such a massive reputation and is spoken of in hushed tones. Classic as hell. I have listened to it but I remember littlke and I remember listening with a bit of a "checklist" attitude. Wanna hear this with fresh ears.)
3. A Moon Shaped Pool by Radiohead/2016/RYM #205 all time album (Ah yes how clearly I recall the way the world of music nerds went wild when this released. Have maybe gotten through it 2 times. Never really liked it for some reason, but honestly I could use a good close listen. Full disclosure the highest ranked album I felt I needed a revisit on was In Rainbows, but I went ahead and got that out of the way in my own time and I found that I loved it when I thought it was overrated as fuck before the revisit. Maybe this will be the same way.)
4. Here Come The Warm Jets by Eno/1974/RYM #255 all time album (If this is chosen I will also be listening to Before and After Science. Both are a bit or a lot vague in my recollection. Remember thinking this was cool and all but... slightly let down. My Eno love-fest-journey started with listening to Another Green World and Ambient 1 and I ADORED and still adore both. However I never found another album by him that really really even came close. This and BAAS need revisits now that they have a chance to be out of the shadow of those 2 albums mentioned.)
5. Getz/Gilberto by Stan Getz & João Gilberto featuring Antônio Carlos Jobim/1964/RYM #297 all time album (Another absolute classic I've not really indulged in. Looking forward to checking it out.)

Definitely a rough and raw album that sounds like a debut album from a local band. Luckily this works for me as I have a huge soft spot for my own local bands and their albums that they have probably a put a lot of heart and work into with minimal resources. I would have gone and seen this band at some small local venue if I was around when and where they were playing. Some punky indie rock with some decent variety throughout. I easily preferred the punky shouty vocals songs rather than the singing ones. A cool listen, and it's always great to hear some unknown artists (65 monthly spotify listeners) that are actually quite decent. A solid 7.5/10 which is good enough for #48 in my yearly top 100.
Sorry Mercury you've got me choosing for you again, and we nearly lost you the last time I did that. Glad you did give Daughters the time though and came back. Anyway at the risk of doing it again I gotta give you my favourite from these, A Moon Shaped Pool. It did take me a few listens but it is now one of my favourite Radiohead albums (probably top 3). I get why people don't like it though so if needed just grin and bear it and hope to see you back again soon. 😁

Okay, this is good and probably the most pretty and shimmering Radiohead album. The 3rd track is awesome and the last closing track is one of the most touching and beautiful and tear-inducing songs ever written and recorded.
The other tracks are consistently subtle and gorgeous and well produced. It still isn’t a favorite certainly not of all time more of even Radiohead’s discography. For me it’s Kid A and OK Computer still tops, followed a bit by In Rainbows and The Bends followed by albums I enjoy but don’t love like A Moon Shaped Pool and Amnesiac and Hail to the Thief.
Anyway, it was good to just relax and listen and listen good to this more recent Radiohead album. Hasn’t hooked me yet and maybe never will (I’m not a huge Radiohead fan) but it is good.

Tago Mago by Can
You're right Mercury, calling music "boomer" is really redundant but I'm always doing it for the laughs. For some reason Can doesn't feel like a boomer band though, maybe because they were pretty experimental and even ahead of the curve. Of all the major krautrock bands, I think Can is the biggest blind spot I have (had). There are krautrock classic I've not yet heard and I've actually listened to all 3 major Can albums prior to this pick but honestly I can't remember much about any of them except Future Days (gave that one 3-4 listens a few years ago). Well at least I had a general idea of what this would sound like. And - spoiler alert - it sounds incredible. Halleluhwah seems to be the consensus highlight and while it's good, Paperhouse and Bring Me Coffee or Tea are both comfortably better imo. Halleluhwah and Aumgn have the best sections on the whole album, but both seem to go on forever which kinda impacts my enjoyment. Also gave Ege Bamyasi another listen, now I'd rank them:

This was cool. It mostly sounds like a slightly updated Bowie album. Maybe it takes a few more listens to unravel the album’s qualities, but mostly it made me want to listen to 70s Bowie (which is weird because I’m not a big fan of his works either).
That said the melodies and some of the musical builds and hooks are stellar and brilliantly written. It was a nice feeling listen to a good classic rock album (I know it’s not exactly”Classic Rock” - what I mean is a pretty highly heralded album firmly within the pop rock realm) and it felt somewhat educational.
I had very meh feelings about Parklife and This Is Hardcore as well when I heard them (my 2 fave “britpop albums I would guess based off a cursory glance at charts of britpop as well as recollection) and they have both grown on me to great liking if not love.
Most of these bands seem like refueled 90s updates of great bands and artists of the 60s and 70s - and I GREATLY prefer hearing The Kinks and The Beatles and even David Bowie over the offshoots. All in all the whole Britpop phenomenon seems like something maybe I had to be there for. I’m seems it was a pretty significant and major movement of sorts in ‘93 in the UK. And I bet it was very exciting for a lot of young kids in that era. But maybe that significance and excitement just doesn’t translate to me across a generation of time and an ocean.
Those words are selling short the album which I don’t want to do. I think I will give it a 3 or 3.5 on RYM. It’s really cool. Most of the Travis here on Dog Man Star are beautifully written and performed and even sometimes quite epic and moving. I think “We are The Pigs”, “The Wild Ones”, “New Generation”, “Still Life” and “athe Asphalt World” are excellent and there are probably others to which I am forgetting to show respect. It’s really solid and I am glad I heard it.

Mean Ol' Frisco by Arthur "Big Boy" Crudup
Pros: I can play this album whenever and wherever and I'll enjoy it (moderately). Cons: it's redundant to say this, but I'll say it anyway, delta (and other old acoustic) blues is often one dimensional and simply put I'm not the biggest fan of every artist in the genre. There has to be something that really draws my attention like Robert Johnson's crazy guitar playing, Muddy Waters' great intimate production or Mississippi John Hurt's playful and heartfelt playing and songwriting. Most of the rest of the ol' bluesers I've heard are all fine and I enjoy their music but that's it. This is where I'd rank Crudup. 7/10

This was indeed great. And the vocals are indeed "burpy" as fuck! Indeed I think I pushed play on this a year or 2 ago and I was turned off by the vocals to a point where I wasn't paying much attention to the music. BUT this time was very very different. I have heard enough wild DM vocals and so I got over my giggles quick and actually started to if not enjoy them, at least started feeling like they fit the music and I could look past them.
The arrangements and the underlying vibe of the music though!...holy shit! Really excellent! The gnarly, atonal, guitar riffs seem to be constantly tangled underfoot. Yet the moments of clarity where the big riffs come in are glorious. The drums sound live and human and excellent! This is some technical death metal that truly transcends much of the genre I've heard (admittedly not a huge amount) because it doesn't sound super wanky, nor does it sound like a mad dash to present me with the most possible ideas it can. These arrangements and tracks seem fleshed out and yet almost spontaneous and, again, human. With some Techniacal Death/Thrash while being awesome technical showcases can feel jarring or almost too perfect and impressive, the changes in a lot of the technical stuff tends to leave me feeling cold (as of now some Death songs fit this description and even Atheist seems a bit too mechanical and jarring with its change ups). This album has none of those problems. It's fabulous. Really really dig this. Thanks for the nomination, my friend.

The Absence Of Blight by Lawrence
One of the most simplistic yet most accurate comments on RYM reads "Great bass heavy sound". I think this is the best review anyone could ever give, no commas or anything just great bass heavy sound. Indeed, the pummeling bass completely sells the songs even when they're slightly too repetitive or lack creativeness. Which isn't all too often, but it happens to the best. Goes to my 00s chart and I'll actively seek more Lawrence albums since I'm addicted to this minimal yet engaging house/techno sound. High 8.5/10

Zappa is a perplexing and fascinating character and legend in music history. I have known this for most of my life, but every time I push play on anything Zappa-made (very rare, for some reason) the same realization and understanding comes to me. You just never know what you are going to get. He is one of the greatest guitarists i've ever heard - managing to be both one of those classic rock-era virtuosos to equal all of 'em while never sounding like the Page's and Beck's and Clapton's of the time... not remotely. He's also a great and unique vocalist, all evillll and strange and funny and ironic. And his production skills and the way he visualizes or crafts the music is legendary and rightfully so. This album fratures all these insanely rare and brilliant qualities - God-level guitar brilliance, pristine and modern sounding production even nearly 50 years later, and a streak of brilliantly done vocal performances. Still.... there is also that certain something that keeps me from haead-over-heels loving this album. I should, based off the sum of its parts. But instead I JUST really REALLYT like and respect it. Maybe its just that I have not gotten grips on his humour and sneering side, it rubs me the wrong way still (still this is way better and less annoying than Freak Out!). But when I think about it I feel like I should love that funny un-serious side to his songwriting. It distinguishes him even more and only when I hear a Zappa or Mothers album it seems do I really reflect on how self-seriousness and artsyness has dominated rock forever. This should make me respect his albums more I suppose. But alas it doesn't and it is still a hindrance.
Here I go again dwelling on the negatives with an album I was quite impressed with. I think outside of Hot Rats this is my fave Zappa that I have heard. And, considering this is only my first listn, my opinion could rise with a few returns. It's a funky, beautifully produced rock album that flirts with mainstream sounds with that classic Zappa twist.

2. Yank Crime by Drive Like Jehu/1994/RYM #461 all time album (I heard this once years ago, thought it was cool and never returned. Need to revisit this post hardcore classic)
3. Strawberry Jam by Animal Collective/2007/RYM #500 all time album (This band used to be just about the coolest band in the world and I remember never really getting swept up even remotely in the hype at their peak. Now that a decade+ has passed since their peak hype phase, I would like to listen with fresh ears. Can't remember anything about this album after all these years.)
4. Band On The Run by Paul McCartney & Wings/1973/ RYM #583 all time album I've heard a few McCartney albums, including maybe this one - can't clearly remember. The only one I've really loved is Ram. This should be a good pop rock listen. Curious to hear it.)
5. 무너지기 (Crumbling) by 공중도둑 Mid-Air Thief/2018/ RYM #652 all time album (kind of a recent album that looks cool and I wanna check out. Also seems to be quite loved.)
6. E·MO·TION by Carly Rae Jepson/2015/RYM #719 all time album (I never have heard this one. Apparently its something of a modern pop classic.)
7. Os Mutantes by Os Mutantes/1968/RYM #787 all time album (utterly classic album I've been hearing about for years and yet I can't say I've eva pushed play. The time is almost here.)
8. Leaving Your Body Map by maudlin of the Well/2001/RYM #831 all time album (interesting looking avant garde metal. will listen to Bath released same day as well probably. I have found an excuse to include this on every single list of potential picks. surely, its time will come.)
9. Michigan by Sufjan Stevens/2003/RYM #883 all time album (I feel an itch for early Sufjan especially in preperation for upcoming album. I remember listening to a lot of Illinois and Carrie & Lowell when they blew up but this one I have maybe heard 1 or 2 times all the way through and not nearly enough.)
10. Confield by Autechre/2001/RYM #982 all time album (Bring it on. I have heard this is nothing short of genius but also very challenging for some. I am ready for some genius ambient experimental mindscrewing!) _________________ -Ryan
