Cool write up Repo. I'm not sitting on the fence here but I agree with both you and CA regarding this album.

SBS is a better album than Sabotage but all of the things that you say about Sabotage are also true. A great performance from Ozzy on all of the tracks and the album does flow very well. So why do i put SBS above Sabotage? I think that the rest of the bands contributions are slightly superior on SBS and I think that there are slightly better songs on SBS as well.

That's not to say that Sabotage isn't a great album, it is and, like you, I would place it amongst the greatest metal albums of all time. (I feel a custom chart coming up).

It's interesting what you say about Judas Priest taking Sabbs mantle as Heavy Metal crown bearers. It was only fitting that another Brummie band took the lead on this. The honour of the city was intact.

Are there any other albums from 1975 that you would include in your chart of the greatest metal albums of all time? ๐Ÿค”

Thatโ€™s a great question. Iโ€™d argue that led zeppelin were never a metal band and certainly by the time 1975 came round, thereโ€™s no way to argue that physical graffiti is metal. Fabulous album though

Were budgie metal or heavy rock? They certainly had metal inclinations so

Bandolier (1975) by Budgie

Would get in there.

What about you? Any other albums come to mind?

My bad! I should have said Hard Rock/Heavy Metal. For me, "Metal" evolved over the years, but as a kid, us "metalheads" back in the early 80s would certainly consider all these albums below Metal Classics (and ALL would EASILY make my list) ...

Toys In The Attic (1975) by Aerosmith

T.N.T. (1975) by AC/DC

Physical Graffiti (1975) by Led Zeppelin

AND, now that I've heard it I'd also add...

In Trance (1975) by Scorpions

================================================

Great call on that Budgie album! I honestly have not heard it enough because they were never that big over here. But they really should have been. Love their first two albums for sure!

"Rocks" (1976) by Aerosmith

It's heavier than Toys, has better songs, better playing, better riffs, Tyler's best vocal album, and is above Toys as Aerosmith's peak. All day long. Top 5 American hard rock albums of all time. And it doesn't have anything out of place like "Big Ten Inch Record".

Interesting Ozzy take on Budgie. They supported him on the Blizzard Of Ozz tour on 1982. Funny how even a random post brings us back to Ozzy.

Great track and criminally underrated back in the US (from what you are saying). They had a bit of success in Europe & Australia.

Bandolier is actually quite a "soft" album for them. Go back four years to

Budgie (1971) by Budgie

Now that's way more Heavy Metal. Guts is a great opening track which I'd argue is definitely metal

I've heard for many, many YEARS that the reason Tony Iommi wanted to change Sabbath's sound up on Technical Ecstasy was he was a bit jealous of the commercial success of Foreigner & the AOR Hard Rock sound they achieved on their debut. As hard as that is to believe in and of itself, it doesn't seem like it can even be factually true as ...

Technical Ecstasy (1976) by Black Sabbath

came out a year before...

Foreigner (1977) by Foreigner

What am I missing here?! Am I just an idiot and have fallen for the metalhead equivalent of QAnon? ๐Ÿ˜…

I must admit I haven't read about a Foreigner connection to Technical Ecstasy. There is one comment made by Ozzy (i think) when hearing some of the early mixes that Tony had put together say that they were starting to sound like Foreigner or Queen, but that's all I can see and might even not be totally accurate.

I think that this is going to be an interesting album to discuss.

NB - One of Sabbs best album covers

Between punk and the proliferation of much softer rock from the likes of Eagles and ELO dominating the charts, a nervous Tony Iommi looked to open Black Sabbath's sound to keep up with the times. Holing up in a Miami recording studio, the guitarist was adamant that the group add some new wrinkles to the sound: "In the studio, Tony (Iommi) was always saying, 'We've gotta sound like Foreigner', or 'We've gotta sound like Queen,'" singer Ozzy Osbourne remembered in his autobiography, I Am Ozzy. "But I thought it was strange that the bands we'd once influenced were now influencing us." - from Rhino's liner notes for the re-release of Technical Ecstasy

Totally! Amazing album cover. Perhaps my third favorite cover of theirs after the debut (just iconic!) and Heaven & Hell. Although I love all of them thus far EXCEPT for Paranoid's. lol. Perhaps THAT is why I have it ranked relatively low. ๐Ÿคฃ

AND, you know what I'm guessing?! Ozzy got Foghat mixed up with Foreigner!!! That would make way more sense timeline wise.

Foghat would have made way more sense.

Got to be honest, technical ecstasy is not a go to album for me to get my Sabb fix but going to reacquaint myself with it right now.

It's really good Hard Rock. BUT, it's a bit vanilla. When you have such a unique sound as Sabbath, a sound that NO ONE could touch, it's a bit of disappointment when you try to be like everyone else putting out albums in the mid-70s and shoot for the middle-of-the-road. It's sort of like HBO wanting to become a Netflix killer with Max. How did that work out?! ๐Ÿคฃ

That said, it's still very good album. Better than Foghat's Fool For The City for example, except OF COURSE for the epic "Slow Ride." That song rules! \m/

I'd put it in the same realm as Deep Purple's Come Taste The Band, (which was also Hard Rock and a massive departure from their classic Mrk II sound), but perhaps just a half star worse.
