Actually, those two Dire Straits albums that were mentioned are pretty well-regarded. Hardly underrated. If any of their albums are underrated, it would be Communique or Alchemy. Then again, maybe they're NOT underrated. Maybe it's just that I prefer them.

I'm going to go with...

Naveed by Our Lady Peace

The 1990s had a lot of great Canadian rock music. Unfortunately, outside of Canada, nobody was paying any attention. If Our Lady Peace were a popular AMERICAN music artist, I have no doubt that Naveed would have gone down as one of the most iconic albums of the 1990s. Released in 1994, it somehow managed to sound like some sort of middle ground between 1991's Nevermind and 1997's OK Computer, influenced by the former (but not ripping it off) while hinting at what was to come with the latter.

The Essex Green - The Long Goodbye

Great bit of indie/chamber pop that's rated ludricously low on BEA (593rd for 2003!). "Chartiers" is the kind of song that immediately lightens my mood.

Probably OK Computer, most people don't really talk about that one, and I don't know anybody that really likes it.

But seriously, it depends on the definition of underrated. Do you mean album best album that people haven't heard of, or do you mean an album most people don't like or aren't very big fans of?

Well I'd be interested in listening to both your unappreciated and underrated albums!

I'd probably go with Variations in Dream-time by Anthony Davis. One of the masterpieces of the 80s, of Jazz, and all time, but you'd be hard pressed to ever meet someone that has even heard of it.

Listening to this now. It's amazing! Cool

98.12.28 Otokotachi No Wakare by フィ...[Fishmans]

Or

UchÅ« Nippon Setagaya by フィッシãƒ...[Fishmans]

Don't understand why Long Season gets more love than these two. Even though that album is great, these two are easily better. 98.12.28 Otokotachi no Wakare is my favourite album of all time, and it's dissapointing to see that it's not even top 1000 on this site. TBH Fishmans in general are just underrated.

Live At The Village Vanguard by John Coltrane

This is IMO Coltrane's second best album after A Love Supreme, and deserves more love than it gets.

Agreed. In fact I've listened to Long Season more than anything else in the last 12 months and adore so much that it's even managed to penetrate what (given my age) has always been a pretty static all-time top 10. Even managed to pick it up on vinyl in the last month straight from Japan - it's a stellar record.

As regards 98.12.28, I don't think it's that under-rated, if you want to tar it with an under-appreciation brush. The folk over at RYM have it in their top 250 or something from memory, and for a record which never got a release out of Japan that's pretty immense. Sure, a fair few people on BEA haven't heard of it, but when you consider that the majority of chat on the forums these days is about the same old stuff it's hardly surprising. I for one really miss some of the personalities on here that turned me on to a load of new sounds, both modern and older nuggets I'd missed out on. Rarely happens now - need Satie, Gowi, dbz, Suede and co back (thankfully Antonio, Norm, Hayden and Tap are still around for me to pinch new sounds from).
