Solid hard bop, but neither did I find anything but the opener really catching. Good, but nothing soul searching. 80.

Mezzanine by Massive Attack
By the end of the first song I thought wow, this is going to be a great album. The album had a great sound, great mood, great atmosphere, some good beats, and some great sounds. If everything was as great as that first song, Dissolved Girl (especially around the 3 minute mark), and to a lesser extent Teardrop (which is an excellent song that I've probably heard just that little bit too much over the years) I would have loved it, but ultimately, and I can't articulate exactly why, it just fell short of being a great album. It still gets an 8/10, and a ranking of 12/29 for 1998.
I haven't heard any of these Seth but Boris interests me so that's what you're getting.

I just got home from UMass commencement, which I had an organizational role in, and I'm so beat I started to put my headphone jack in my ear.
Anyway, I took the liberty of substituting the more comprehensive release from Mercury's list, which includes every song on Dark Was The Night. I heard this a couple days ago, but I've been too busy to post about it until now.
The Complete Blind Willie Johnson by Bl...ie Johnson
This is really good. His voice is more gravelly and his guitar is simpler than I expected. The lyrics are pretty direct and repetitive, gospel lyrics placed in a blues format. Johnson imbues his songs with a powerful, soulful charisma that carries them through the flaws. There are some great ones in here, and I especially like the ones with backing vocals. 3.5/5.

If You're Feeling Sinister by Belle And Sebastian
This is the first Belle And Sebastian album that I have listened to, their songs never made me want to, and it was about what I expected - good. I can see why it's rated well, although maybe not quite this high on the all time BEA chart. I rather enjoyed the first few songs with their sniff of The Velvet Underground and The Smiths influences, but after a while it all became a bit too nice and twee for my tastes to become really well liked. Score 7.5/10, rank 23/32 for 1996.
I'm torn between three here Baystate: The ever reliable The Fall with one of their well regarded albums, or the maybe obvious choice of Tim Buckley, but I am going to go with the curiousity, Bobb Trimble.

Iron Curtain Innocence by Bobb Trimble
Wow, this exceeded all expectations! Simply gorgeous, lush, mellow psych folk/pop that sounds like it was made a decade before it actually was. I don't know why lots of people seem to focus on the music's weirdness, because this isn't any weirder than other works from the style it's recorded in. This guy grew up a stone's throw from my dad and they are very close in age. Starting it at a high 4/5.

Boris At Last: -Feedbacker- by Boris
I liked the part where there was feedback... hehe. No but for reals tracks 1 and 3 were really cool. As a whole though it was good, but nothing transforming. 80... could be an 85 with a better mix (although that'd be my interpretation... if you want a true feedback experience, then this is "correctly" mixed.

Sandinista! by The Clash
Lol what the hell is this? Possibly the most incoherent and disorienting album I have ever heard. A significant portion of good songs, but so sloppily sequenced and conceived, and absolutely packed with filler. And somehow they were so set on this triple (!) album as an artistic statement that they left lots of money on the table to keep it as is. The third part is where it reaches its peak of both bizarreness and mediocrity. Dub is a great genre, but The Clash are far from its most skilled practitioners. Will I ever listen to the whole behemoth again? Doubtful. But there are enough really good songs that I can't delete this album from my library either. 3/5.

Modern Vampires Of The City by Vampire Weekend
A couple of my kids like Vampire Weekend, so I've heard a lot of their songs, as well as seeing them live before, so I knew what to expect going into this album. A couple of really good songs, a little bit of quirkiness (but not enough for my tastes), and basically some solid good indie pop, but nothing special to raise it above most of the good indie pop out there. To be honest I don't see how it's rated the best album of 2013 here. I did have a huh! moment when I heard the line in Finger Back - "I don't wanna live like this, but I don't wanna die" realising that they have reused that line in Harmony Hall from their latest album. Not that I've heard that album yet either but the radio station I listen to at work has been hammering that song. Score 7.5/10, ranking 29/36 for 2013.

Zuma by Neil Young And Crazy Horse
This is just classic Neil... that twangy/flat picked singing guitar and voice, but it's a hippie not a hillbilly. Half the time I felt like a stoner listening to this record. And it reminded me a tinge of Zuma Beach. Cortez the Killer was an amazing song and cut deep just like a good Niel Young song. And just like most Niel Young albums (for me at least), there's quality work, cutting tracks, but overall I'd rather this just play in the background while drifting off in conversation than actually listen to it intently, so it gets an 83 (mostly the bump for Cortez) instead of an 80 or 85. Thanks Bay - Ironically, I had heard this album while drifting off in conversation with my sister, and then we stopped and actually paid attention to Cortez the Killer besides some unique guitar work from the man, it's just great to listen to in the background.
2. Purplepash: check out California by Mr. Bungle. I just did and at the very least it was like floss to my ears. It cleaned them near right up... hehe. I almost suggested the Gas or Disclosure or Boards of Canada album.. but Mr. Bungle it is.

American Idiot by Green Day
I wasn't expecting to like this. It's Green Day, a group that has never caught my ear enough to try an album despite previous exposure. It's somewhat of a rock opera, which I have a hard time with historically, and it's been adapted into a musical at that. In spite of these barriers, and in spite of criticisms I have of the album, I did enjoy it. Yes, it is indulgent, the lyrics are larded with cringeworthy turns of phrase, and his voice can get grating at times. But instrumentally, I'm surprised to say it's pretty great, and there are some strong hooks as well. These aspects really carry the album through its questionable moments. No, it won't become a favorite, but I enjoyed getting to know this record. 3/5.

2. Heard zero of those, but the Brian Eno record interests me most.
