I've got a weird one for y'all.

What are the best alternate album covers?

On this site, and most other places, the album cover for the Sneaker Pimps "Becoming X" is this.

Becoming X by Sneaker Pimps

If I had no idea what this band was, based on this cover, I would definitely have no clue whatsoever. What the hell is a "Sneaker Pimp"? And what does it have to do with microchips?

Here's the alternate cover.

At least that looks like a group of people who might make cool music.

Any other alternate covers that you think are better than the original?

You Forgot It In People by Broken Social Scene

The newer version of this fits in line with the rest of BSS' covers so I prefer the one not shown on BEA

Your Favorite Weapon by Brand New

Pretty much the same thing for this one, the cover on BEA is very different than the newer one and I'm glad they changed it eventually to fall in line with the band's aesthetics

Ok so not necessarily "best" or even close to it, but I found it really odd that Thompson Twins' "Into the Gap" has 2 different pieces of artwork:

Into The Gap by Thompson Twins
and this https://img.discogs.com/ByhePVFXxrv7rzX...4.jpeg.jpg

It's pretty similar but just using a different photoshoot. I thought it was bizarre and can't for the life of me figure out why 2 different covers were used. For some reason I have a copy of each haha

Biggest one for me is Akuma No Uta. This is apparently the original cover, but what even is it? The Nick Drake homage is definitely way better and more well known.

Akuma No Uta by ボリス [Boris]

I also prefer the cover on the reissue of Dopesmoker to the original, though the original is pretty good too.

Dopesmoker by Sleep

Also hard disagree on You Forgot It In People, I think the original cover matches the music a lot better.

That's easy.
The best one of all is The Marshall Mathers LP: the grey-ish/black-ish where he lays in front of a fence of a house (or least I think that's what it is). Much much more gritty, dystopian, and subtly brutal than the original where he sits in front of his home.

I'm only previously familiar with the alternate one. Must have been this one that we had in the UK. Yeah, it is much better. It's a much more eye-catching and memorable image.

other amazing alternates are

Are You Experienced by The Jimi Hendrix Experience : the yellow trippy one

Continuum by John Mayer : the one with the picture of him walking on a highway

Mount Eerie by The Microphones : the drawing of a mountain and clouds (basically the Spotify-one)

Different Stars by Trespassers William : the Bella-Union edition

The Origin of The Feces by Type O Negative : the drawing of dancing skeletons

Shawn Mendes by Shawn Mendes : the self-made Napoleon one

I actually like both those Eminem covers. His recent sleeves look like garbage mind you.

And I think I'd give the edge to the original Dopesmoker cover, but the second one is still excellent.

Anyway, Fahey's got three alts here—

Original—

And of course the original Is This It is better.

Dopesmoker 100%. The original cover is cool, the alternate is better (just like the rerecorded album). Akuma No Uta is another good one. I like both the original and alternate Wolfheart cover.

To keep it in the same genre, Agalloch's Ashes Against the Grain alternate cover is cooler and represents the album better.

Alternate

I love a good album cover, there's a lot of others worth mentioning like the would-be Damn. cover (Superfly homage, google it if you don't know), Are You Experienced? etc.

Ooh IMO these are the best examples so far, totally agree on Akuma No Uta as well as Dopesmoker
