I was impressed with both of these songs. Might wait a bit to vote, but prior to the competition I hadn't heard either I don't believe.
Listened to Cherub first, and I thought that had it in the bag. The steady crescendo as the song goes on was wonderfully accomplished.
But The Long Bright Dark... whoa, this is different than most stuff I listened to in the past couple years. I don't feel like I'll come back to this song as much as Cherub, but it has me wanting to listen to more music by the artist much more.
glad to see Shiroishi well received. short and sweet and powerful. a song that stuck in my head since I heard it.
a lot of Shiroishi's work lately has focused on Japanese concentration camps in America (this is from an album titled Hidemi, for his grandfather, who survived the camps) and the seemingly sunny chant in this is actually him saying "is this the end of the storm" only for it to end in discordant overblows, which is how the album begins, seemingly signaling that the circle has not been broken (especially considering the recent uptick in violence against Asian Americans).
Both songs grabbed my attention in a positive way: but The Long Bright Track maybe a bit more because it is interesting and special and Cherub because it's just a great song. So my choice goes to Cherub.
Dig both and hadn't come across either artist before so will have to do a bit of digging there, Ball Park Music just about edged it in the end. _________________

Cherub is sad in a lovely way, I feel like a teenager.
The Long Bright Dark is also excellent and I'll defintely keep an eye on Patrick Shiroishi, but Cherub won my heart and gets my vote. _________________ Bob Dylan Charles Mingus
