Listening to all these whilst on the go, get in early, familiar with both of these already, enjoy both, probably giving Faye Webster a slight edge here. _________________
Was surprisingly tough call. Initially I thought "well, Faye Webster's style and most recent album is way way more style than the same for Mogwai, so surely I'll end up voting for Faye's song." Then I listened to both and I found myself strangely unimpressed or unmoved by "Better Distractions" compared to how I remember feeling about it last year when I heard it a lot. And then Mogwai's track was way more interesting and beautiful than I recall thinking of it last year. So what ended up happening was another new listen and then a slight sliiiight win by... "Better Distractions". I do like that lazy, sleepy style and her vocals are subtle and beautiful and cool lyrics too along with crisp production. Post-Rock of the type Mogwai perfected isn't really my thing. Good song though, for sure. _________________ -Ryan
Better Distractions is for me an average singer-songwriter joint, prolly one of my lesser liked songs from her album. It's not bad per se but I can absolutely live without it, especially that "will ya will ya" I found tedious.
The Mogwai tune TTBMFTWVE is, wholeheartedly, the highlight from my favorite 2021 album and my favorite song from last year in general. It's prolly the only song of the thousands that struck a unique emotional chord nearly every time I heard it. I feel like in a movie and at the same time feeling like something very grand is knocking on my door. The track from start to finish is loaded with compositional beauty. Here is my mini-review of it on my 2021-chart:
"Song of the year. There I said it, with pride. This is in the top 10 best post rock composition I've ever heard.
Starting with someone saying the title like a movie sample, the music begins moving in a lost universe, and slowly finding its way, with the crawling drums and waterfloating piano. Midway through, the distortion of a guitar tornadoes itself into the mix, and it's one of the most (if not the most) overwhelming I've heard all decade. It's like being torn around by a snowy wind, or surfing an avalanche.
When I hear this song, I feel either numbed or everything, but I somewhat love both. Nothing less than supreme."
Not big on either but on a re-listen, Mogwai is a little cooler. I was originally thinking of abstaining but I'm voting Mogwai _________________ 51 Washington, D.C. albums!
