Rating metrics:
Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. There are a few brilliant moments on here and if you listen to the bonus track "Boy King Trash" you will hear that they weren't in lack of ideas, so it's a shame this album turned out so underwhelming. I know the band were in the process of breaking up at the time of putting this one out so maybe that contributed to this concept being a bit of a swing and a miss. Definitely worth a listen but probably the poorest execution of any Wild Beasts' album.
This is a good album, just has some weak tracks that let the whole thing down (Boy King Trash especially), it is an album quite similar to Arctic Monkeys AM due to it's focuse and constant re-use of the slow drum beat. Got some good songs (Ponytail) and some crap, not a terrible album.
A kind of cross between the, smother, and, present tense, albums. It's good, but maybe they are starting to run out of ideas. Need to put the electronic instruments away for a bit. Still, it is Wild beasts, so all is not lost, and it always takes ages for their albums to peak, so who knows? In a few months it may be my favourite Wild beasts album. Not yet though.
Some songs are smelling like a sell out (poppy 'Get My Bang' and 'Tough Guy'), but the overall quality disproves that. Sometimes sounding like other bands (Muse on several tracks, Perfume Genius on 'Dreamliner'), this is a really different shift in sound. Not as good as their previous effort, the album has it's flaws, but the overall impression in positive. Even long time fans like myself will find something to like on this album.
