Rating metrics:
Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)
This album is rated in the top 2% of all albums on BestEverAlbums.com. This album has a Bayesian average rating of 78.5/100, a mean average of 77.7/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 78.6/100. The standard deviation for this album is 15.3.

This album grew on me a bit, some heautiful pop country ballads are here.
There is a lot of fun to be had on this record as it is full of catchy songs with very good choruses but the quality never really goes beyond just being very good. I seem to find the same thing in most of Elton Johns music in the fact that he is pretty consistent at being good but never really pushes himself further than that. It would be nice to see a bit more experimentation on this release or some more good performances on diverse instruments as you can guess the type of song and style it is just by knowing it is an Elton John song. However, there is quite a lot to enjoy about this record such as the vocals which are consistently fantastic and are very relatable so I can see why he is so popular. He has a very good grit to his voice that gives it an edge making it very unique and that is well displayed on this record. I am also a huge fan of the piano playing which is energetic and fills the record full of life. Then there is obviously the hooks and choruses which keep people coming back time and time again. Overall, it is impossible to not have a good time with this record but for me it needs a bit more to be up near the greatest of all time.
Very good singing, nice listen but nothing really stands out here. 6,5/10
Tumbleweed Connection is one of Elton's great early works. Burn Down the Mission acted as an innovative preview to his forthcoming record, 'Madman Across the Water', arguably his masterpiece.
Remarkably consistent album. The only thing that holds it back is that it didn't have a true hit song on it, but there is a lot of gold on this album. Its easily a top 5 Elton John album.
Key tracks: Ballad of a Well-Known Gun, Come Down in Time, Country Comfort, My Father's Gun and Burn Down the Mission.
A brilliant performer on the way up. Burn Down The Mission and Where To Now St. Peter are pre-pop classics. Amoreena... lovely
Whew...a dessert island album for sure. MAYBE his best..?
Fantastic album. Strong contender for the best Elton John album. There are no weak tracks here, it's great from start to finish.
Wow..was Elton ever on a tear during this period. Fave tracks:
Amoreena
Burn Down The Mission
Where To Now Saint Peter?
Come Down In Time
...But the whole album is fantastic.
Wonderful album! This one COULD be my favorite by EJ. The Old West theme works REALLY well. "Talking Old Soldiers" is one of the best, most heartfelt songs I've ever heard. It's my FAVORITE song by Elton. This album reminds us HOW good he once was.
