The album where The Jam found their identity and sound. A perfect mix of new wave/punk mixed with 60's Who & Kinks mod influences
Great album, this band sounds like mix of The Clash, Talking Heads and Ramones. Something between punk rock and new wave.

Album of the year. 1978.
Credit for it's vibrance. I recall this album at the time and was mildly interested - wasn't quite the spit of punk rock.
not really my thing but decent enough soft punk
The Jam pulled this gem out of the bag just when they were on the point of becoming one of punk's also rans. Some quite brilliant songs of anger and love as Wellers prose started to spread it's wings. "To be Someone" "Mr Clean" seemed inspirational at the time, only later did i discover how much they had leaned on the Kinks. Check out "Shangri la" a Kinks number with striking similarities to the aforementioned tracks.
A great seminal album that was at the forefront of the breakout from punk that saw some superb albums over the next 3 years by the likes of Costello, the Clash and the Buzzcocks.
Classic jam, derivative of Townsend and the Beatles in parts but some fine fine songs. Fly is self consciously tender, English rose is lovely. All mod cons in its brevity an d impact is great also. Stand out track down in the tube station has a fantastic bass line and oozes the venom of far right thugs, excellent.
