Calvin Harris actually put out a record I can get behind. One that isn’t overloaded with generic EDM tracks. Sure, a few tracks fall flat (Feels...), but by stepping away from his usual formula and diving into funk, disco, and rap influences, Funk Wav feels surprisingly fresh and even a little daring compared to the mainstream pop landscape of 2017.
I never thought I'd say this, but here is a Calvin Harris record that I can tolerate, that isn't jam-packed with shitty EDM tunes. I mean, don't get me wrong, some songs are downright mediocre ("Feels" for instance) but by eschewing EDM tropes and pushing into funk / disco rap territory, "Funk Wav" sounds fresh and actually sort of bold compared to mainstream pop in 2017.
Almost a year old and man this is excellent. I was never crazy about Calvin that much but this piece a music is excellent. Stars like Young Thug as well as the Migos Crew able to pull there weight and a lot of the features I love do a damn well job. Really want to cop this as well. Maybe Calvin can make another killer record. And though I would love a Vol 2, I kinda want to see if he finds a different lane that I can get enamored.

This is one of the most unexpected surprises of the year. His 2017 singles were commendable: "Slide" took me by surprise, then they just kept getting better and better with "Heatstroke" and "Rollin". "Feels" is a bit weak, but at least that single gained commercial success.
By eschewing corny EDM tropes, Calvin Harris has dropped the soundtrack of the summer. "Funk Wav Bounces Vol. 1" may not be innovative, but it's a consistently impressive, catchy and delightful record.
