Rating metrics:
Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)
This album has a Bayesian average rating of 69.4/100, a mean average of 68.7/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 69.1/100. The standard deviation for this album is 17.5.

Postcards from a Young Man marks another shift for the Manics, as the band enters another decade. Once again turning their backs on their punk rock roots, the band's tenth studio album is a record filled with radio-friendly anthems, built around recognizable choruses and infectious guitar play. Lyrically, it's Hardy very interesting or original, particularly when comparing with the previous album. But in terms of the music and instrumentation, it is one of the better entries in the band's catalog.
It should be noted, that this LP contains some great rock songs, and in terms of its subject matter, Postcards is one of the happiest and most easygoing the band has released. It's impossible not to sing along with some of the more happy tunes. Perhaps that is why this is such an enjoyable album.
Strings and choirs are abundant, they have just effortlessly made a brilliant album here
Wow, seems there a lot of Manic Street Preachers haters on this site. This a good album, quite a few fillers but some good standouts as well. First two tracks are good, billion balconies, all we make is entertainment, golden platitudes...
The one last shot at mass communication! Whether that will mean anything or not in years to come, what stands out from this album is the right royal noise the group make. The strings are out on 'It's Not War Just The End Of Love' providing a brilliant conclusion to the bitter euphoria 'Your Love Alone Is Not Enough' and 'Some Kind Of Nothingness' displays a fire which has long been dampened or snuffed out in their contemporaries. Fire. That is a great word to use when describing this album. They may be "preaching the choir" yet nothing is slowing them. Since the first album they may have lost everything and nothing. The teeth are out on 'A Billion Balconies Facing The Sun' and 'Auto Intoxication'. This is 2010 though, Manic Street Preachers are no longer all bile. Reflections of past transgressions are aired in 'Golden Platitudes' against the back drop of Britain that was getting worse by the day (and still looking to stay in the slump for few more years) and 'I Think I've Found It' a remarkably happy Manics song about coming to terms with oneself. It is the title track which sums up this album completely. "I won't betray your confidence/ I won't pretend my way was lost/ This world will not impose its will/ I will not give up and I will not give in" and the truth is... they never did. Manic Street Preachers back as strong as ever!
