My favorite Album of all time, and soon-to-be contender of the greatest album of all time. Kanye crafts a lush, nuanced, and dark meditation on fame and celebrity excess and unwittingly creating one of the greatest explorations of the human ego ever. Many reviewers will comment that the maximalist and ground-breaking production are what really carry this album, I disagree. West drops some of his, and some of rap musics, greatest verses. Lines like "I was looking at my resume / feeling real fresh today / they rewrite history, I don't believe in yesterday / And what's a black Beatle anyway/ A fucking roach? / I guess thats why they got me sitting in coach." are as brutally honest as they are funny. He out rhymes some of his most accomplished contemporaries at the height of their talents, while out producing every one. Period. The beats on this album are painstakingly crafted individual masterpieces, but as a whole create one of the most compelling compositions of the past decade. From the schizophrenic tribal drums of "Monster" to the cathartic blues guitar riff on "Gorgeous." Every single beat was as immediate as it was memorable. There are endless pop culture and not-so-pop culture references on this album as well, these allusions give the album a sense of humor and stops it from feeling like a over-bearing stream of consciousness. Even songs that I personally thought were average among the rest ("Blame Game" and "Hell of a Life") are miles ahead of what anyone else in hip hop was doing at the time, and have done to this day.

Kanye can be the most pretentious artist in the world, but this album proves he can be as pretentious as he is good. The lyricism is simple, yet striking. Runaway is a near perfect song.

I totally get why a lot of people have the conception of Kanye that they do, but if part of that conception is that he's not a real artist, they probably just haven't heard this album yet.

My entryway into hip hop. So many great beats that have been produced within this album, as well as great verses. I would recommend this album as a starting point for people who want to get into hip hop.

Best Track: So Appalled/Lost in the World

Not a big hiphop fan, but this is very good, it has everything. From melody to beats, from power and anger to beauty, from arrogance to self-criticism. Complex and complete. Second half of the album is a bit weaker.

58th best album of all time? I mean the production on MBDTF is great and Kanye's best, no doubt, but is good production all an album needs to be hailed as one of "the best of all time" anymore? I thought it was lacking in the vocals/lyrics department on a few too many tracks (even though the vocals/lyrics on the best parts of this album are fine) to be "best of all time" material. Still a good album, but overrated in my eyes.

There're almost no sounds out of place in this record. There're words out of place, true, but let's be honest: nobody cares about the words. We came here for the hooks, for the visionary musical ideas, for the spectacle of colour and texture that Kanye's production is, for the embellished performances of all these invited musicians that West knew how to select so well. This is the album that defines the concept of "pop superproduction", the one that came here to claim pop music is still a form of high art. It also happens to be the best album in over a decade.

Most interesting, well produced, inspiring album you'll find in 2010's easily, a must listen.
