The best Black keys album, but having said that nothing the Black keys do is ever spectacular. Everything they do is always just okay. It's always competently done but it's always nothing better than good. All their songs are just alright. They haven't written even one great song. They're always just okay, nothing more.

There is a lot to enjoy in this album. The guitars lay on riff after riff, the bass and drums are solid and the songwriting is also good, creating an album full of well constructed songs.
The problem is that it is all a bit unspectactular and unoriginal. This could easily be an album from the sixies or seventies, but not in a good way as this sometimes makes the Black Keys sound like a tribute band.
The singer is also a bit of an aquired taste, there aren't any notes which are particularly difficult but he manages to come across as a bit whiney at times. However, despite the songs blending together slightly after half an hour, the album is still a solid 7 and worth a lesson. I just cannot imagine The Black Keys ever surprising me.

Some slight problems with consistency but overall the high moments are really high. Next Girl, Tighten Up, Howlin For You, These Days, and Everlasting Light all deserve to be on their eventual greatest hits record. Also The Only One is hands down the best song they ever made, damn that song is sexy!!!!

If I based my overall chart purely on what I've listened to the most this would likely make top ten. It just fits nearly every mood. And for a couple years, I swear I didn't go a single week without pulling this out, and I often listened multiple times in a day.

WOW - I'm just hearing this album for the first time in Oct 22 and unlike many comments, I am loving it from start to finish. I felt like I knew so many of the tracks right from the off and after 6 listens it's ingrained in my mind. I don't feel 56 minutes is too long or there is much below great on this album. It's scoring an average of 79 on the site so it's obviously resonating with many others too. I like when you find an album from a band that have a few other albums to go and explore and they have another 10 to explore - let's hope more of the same! (Edited)
