Rating metrics: Help Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)

This album is rated in the top 3% of all albums on BestEverAlbums.com. This album has a Bayesian average rating of 77.0/100, a mean average of 76.2/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 77.1/100. The standard deviation for this album is 13.6.

Didn't deserve to lose over Golden Hour. Also, even though I like the album, there is something about the vocals and the way they were mixed that sounds very hollow to me, and it takes me out of the fantasy.

Shortlisted for album of the year at the 2019 Grammys. The winner was Golden Hour by Kacey Musgraves

Easily the best pop album of the year. All sorts of Prince and Bowie vibes. Great features, great themes, great storytelling. Instant hit.

While the second half of the album is definitely weaker than the first half, this is a fantastic record with unique sounds and compelling lyrics. The short film that goes along with it also adds a lot. I will admit, the first time I watched it I didn't realize there was more after the credits and thought the ending was super depressing. That would have been a good ending too, if pessimistic but I'm glad I rewatched and saw the happy ending :)

When she was more coy and ambiguous about her sexuality, Janelle Monáe was already producing some of the most exciting pop music, so I couldn’t really keep myself from building anticipation for this as her “coming out” album. The real revelation here is the way she sheds a lot of the sci-fi metaphors in favour of more direct modes of expression, working her inimitable voice through the sensual synths and harmonic backing vocals.

A Millennial Prince album singed by a woman

Beautiful vocals and catchy melodies

This is an improvement for Janelle!

There is so much self-love is this album that just makes you feel magical when you listen to It. Way ahead from much of what R&B is normally producing, Janelle Monáe takes the genre and mixes groovy tunes with a powerful message.

Overall: 8.8

Top Tracks: "Crazy Classic Life", "Screwed", "Make Me Feel"

Ambitious and intellectual, and probably the most prescient and relevant album of 2018, even if it's not my favorite. Some great funky cuts that sound a lot like updated Prince songs.

Fantastically crafted and timely record. Not as good as ArchAndroid in my book, but in this album, you can hear Monae maturing; lyrics bathed in sexualized lyrics are interesting, especially at the same time she is making political commentary.
