Easily the best pop album of the year. All sorts of Prince and Bowie vibes. Great features, great themes, great storytelling. Instant hit.
While the second half of the album is definitely weaker than the first half, this is a fantastic record with unique sounds and compelling lyrics. The short film that goes along with it also adds a lot. I will admit, the first time I watched it I didn't realize there was more after the credits and thought the ending was super depressing. That would have been a good ending too, if pessimistic but I'm glad I rewatched and saw the happy ending :)
Not as good as The ArchAndroid, but still really good.
Favorites: Screwed, Make Me Feel, Americans
There is so much self-love is this album that just makes you feel magical when you listen to It. Way ahead from much of what R&B is normally producing, Janelle Monáe takes the genre and mixes groovy tunes with a powerful message.
Overall: 8.8
Top Tracks: "Crazy Classic Life", "Screwed", "Make Me Feel"
Ambitious and intellectual, and probably the most prescient and relevant album of 2018, even if it's not my favorite. Some great funky cuts that sound a lot like updated Prince songs.

Fantastically crafted and timely record. Not as good as ArchAndroid in my book, but in this album, you can hear Monae maturing; lyrics bathed in sexualized lyrics are interesting, especially at the same time she is making political commentary.

A bold, cinematic, fiercely intelligent record: maybe the best blend of pop, sex and fury this century. Janelle Monae delivers such a diverse array of performances on this, and her songwriting has never been more finely tuned, more subtly layered, and more joyous to listen to. This takes you on a journey, and almost all the stops are fascinating.

Was she supposed to stay bound to the 'suites'? This is a fantastic album by an artist fully in her prime.
