Overall: 8.8

Top Tracks: "Crazy Classic Life", "Screwed", "Make Me Feel"

Ambitious and intellectual, and probably the most prescient and relevant album of 2018, even if it's not my favorite. Some great funky cuts that sound a lot like updated Prince songs.

Fantastically crafted and timely record. Not as good as ArchAndroid in my book, but in this album, you can hear Monae maturing; lyrics bathed in sexualized lyrics are interesting, especially at the same time she is making political commentary.

A bold, cinematic, fiercely intelligent record: maybe the best blend of pop, sex and fury this century. Janelle Monae delivers such a diverse array of performances on this, and her songwriting has never been more finely tuned, more subtly layered, and more joyous to listen to. This takes you on a journey, and almost all the stops are fascinating.

Was she supposed to stay bound to the 'suites'? This is a fantastic album by an artist fully in her prime.

Now this is fun! Loved it! Though it may have helped that the first time I heard it I was making out...

I wanted more from this album. It's not bad, but she abandoned her story arc of the last albums and opted to reboot the concept with a watered down mainstream version of what she's already done and mastered. There are still some shining moments on this album and her talent still shows through, but there are a few kinda forgettable songs on here, which is unusual for her. ArchAndroid is still her best. I hope she get's back to her saga and completes the last 2 suites!

Textured, tasteful, elegantly synthetic, layered, catchy, sexy, bold but accessible, well-written and thought-provoking. The highlights are numerous (Pynk, Make me feel, Screwed, Dirty computer...) and it's an incredibly fun listen all the way through. As good as The ArchAndroid is, I think this may be her best album to date, and for now, it's probably my favourite record of 2018.

Fantastic album. Yes, it's a commercial departure from the artistic 'Suites' of her first few releases, but it feels like the right time to take this step. All of the artistic lessons learnt from the risk-taking enable Dirty Computer to feel confident and BIG. The collaborations on here are great (Brian Wilson! Grimes! Pharrell Williams, even!) and suggest something about the musical breadth of the album. It's a mainstream release, but it still feels art school. In a word: Classy.
