Sometimes Just the Sky is the fourteenth studio album by Mary Chapin Carpenter, self-released in 2018 on her Lambent Light label.
Carpenter revisited previously recorded songs in 2014 on her Songs from the Movie record. While that one had the novelty of being backed by an orchestra, I'm not sure what motivated her to make re-recordings with a basic studio band.
Carpenter re-treads a song from most of her studio albums here, with the track Superman, an outtake from Time Sex Love and a new track, inspired by Patti Smith, called Sometimes Just the Sky.
But the highlight is the production. Ethan Johns is the perfect producer for Carpenter at this point in her career. Listening to Carpenter's voice supported with swirling synths and gritty guitar sounds heavenly here. The track Superman is the most adventurous she has sounded in the studio since Time Sex Love.
A record of new material also produced by Ethan Johns would be a wise for Carpenter's next move in her career.
