Stranger than it is fun, but not devoid of fun. If this is all The Knife went on to inspire, I guess I was right about them not being a big deal. Other than that, the usual Aphex Twin influence from any proggressive house/IDM look-alike is there, complete with non-sensical track names and eerie, spoken samples over a beat, but that might be second-hand, since The Knife also had few original ideas.
Ross From Friends’ debut Family Portrait feels very much like a record for music nerds, still tethered to the lo-fi YouTube house aesthetic he emerged from but much more fleshed out and nuanced. When I learned the album was inspired by a raving tour of Europe that his parents took in the nineties, it made me reflect on how it’s possible we’ll soon see emerging producers thanking their grandparents for putting them onto the likes of Faithless. Well, I’m old.
