Not a country fan, so this didn't grab me right away, but after four or five listens, I think it's one of the best albums of the year. Production is rich, amplifying the intensity of some very personal lyrics.
Sways between homages to various artists. The Pretenders, St Vincent, Dolly Parton. Not unlistenable but certainly hard to pin down
How funny. I started listening to Amanda Shires on the very day she released this brand new record, which is leaps and bounds above her other records.
Dave Cobb's production has really helped here. It embraces her desire to make music that is extraordinary and unique, while wrapping it in a memorable melody. The result is a catchy and sometimes haunting set of songs that really highlight her interesting lyrics.
Sounds like Dolly Parton belting out Neko Case songs at midnight in a foggy Tennessee bog. Recommended.
