Rating metrics: Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)

This album is rated in the top 24% of all albums on BestEverAlbums.com. This album has a mean average rating of 74.0/100. The trimmed mean (excluding outliers) is 74.7/100. The standard deviation for this album is 15.4.

The least-good national album since Sad Songs, but still has that National sound we all know and love. Its the first one in a long time thats not a classic, but there are some top moments that stand with the national's best. Hairpin Turns is an instant favorite for me. Great song. Opener and closer are both great as as well. A lot of the songs have great moments without being great songs, and I'm a big enough National fan where that's fine with me. If you like this band's sound, there is plenty of melancholic emotion to brood to

Mostly uninteresting to me. The vocals are alright at points but I don't care them overall. The drums are good at times too but for the most part they're too overbearing. The songwriting is the most impressive part of the album but the words aren't really delivered in any fashion that I find compelling.

Weeell, the streak of great The National albums had to end one day. Don´t get me wrong this is still very solid, feels emotional, deep and sincere, and overall beautiful, obviously still worth a listen. But the album is still missing an anthem, or at least some memorable moments.

It´s good to finally see them realeasing Rylan.

The National have 3 albums inside the BEA overall 500 which is no mean feat but this album won’t make number 4

For starters it’s too long , a good 20 minutes too long . The instrumentals along with 3 other tracks ( suggest “Roman Holiday” , “Where Is Her Head” and “ So Far So Fast “) could have found their way onto an Expanded Edition and off the album proper and it would have felt much tighter as opposed to what feels like a rambling 63 minute slog

Secondly the miss fires are big miss fires , all skipable tracks . Too many of these to endure

There are though some gems here to enjoy - “ The Pull Of You” , the beautiful title track , “ Not In Kansas” ( love the REM references “ Begin The Begin” and “ The Flowers Of Guatemala”... the flowers cover over everything... both from REM’ ‘ Life’s Rich Pagent’ album) and course “Rylan” and closer “Light Years”

A National album not appearing on my year end best list , who would have thunk it ? In 2019 it’s happening.

This album is kinda hit and miss with me; however, when it hits, it hits home runs. Rylan is one of the best songs of the year and Light Years is hauntingly beautiful. Other tracks worth your time would be You Had Your Soul With You, Roman Holiday and Hairpin Turns. Most of the other songs are just okay. But again, when this album exceeds the okay level, it goes sky high.

It's striking to me how there's such a difference in opinion, on something as specific as the level of ambition. I struggle to hear how others can call this 'bold' or 'ambitious'. I agree with those who find this a little forgettable. I love the National, and this still sounds lovely. But it's unremarkable. Nothing stands out to me.
