As I write this December 2019 this wonderful album is ranked 519 for 2019 on this site, completely under appreciated
To the uninitiated ‘III’ besides being The Lumineers 3rd album proper it is also a concept album with alcoholism/ addiction at its core as it tells the story of the Sparks family in 3 chapters
Chapter 1 Gloria Sparks
The story begins with Gloria’s mother “ Donna” before outlining her decent into alcoholism and it’s impact on her family “Life In The City” and “Gloria”
Chapter 2 Junior Sparks
Focus shifts to Gloria’s grandson Junior with “It Wasn’t Easy To Be Happy For You” about love and heartbreak followed by the centrepiece of the album “Leader Of The Landslide “ where Junior resents his alcoholic father Jimmy Sparks the son of Gloria in Chapter 1. Eventually Bonnie , Juniors Mum leaves Junior and his father ( “Left For Denver “)
Chapter 3 Jimmy Sparks
Eventually Jimmy goes completely off the rails (“My Cell”) and owes money to loan sharks who beat him senseless , meanwhile Junior disowns his dad and ignores him hitchhiking whilst injured on a road (“Jimmy Sparks “) before the short instrumental “April “ gets us to closer “Salt And The Sea” which appears to be some sort of resolution with Junior forgiving his Dad , blood is thicker than water despite the alcoholism
The overarching narrative explores the impact addiction has on the victims family and loved ones
Accompanying the album are 10 beautiful yet gritty videos of each track which expand on the story and brings the characters to life , essential viewing experience as well as the album
I adore this entire package, from the album itself both lyrically and music wise, the message it sends , the story it tells and the masterful videos . Easily one of 2019’s best albums
It's decent but nothing special. Favorite song is Life In The City.
