They were ready. Their new songs spoke about changes, cultural changes and personal changes. One might argue, they sounded 20 older than they actualle were, but on the other hand, they were simply ahead of their time by 20 years. Rock music does not hold any promise anymore, that what they were saying. But there was something deeply unsetteling, even in the more harmless tunes. Maybe that's why they'd choosen "Earthquake country" as the album's title. But they cound not finish the album, as Jerry Garcia was ready for the next world. - The idea to bring out a collection of live versions of those songs, that might have made it onto the studio release is a good choice. But still the project seemed to have felt like half-hearted to the surviving members, maybe that's why they chose the new title and the hushed sleeve. It would not have been their best album, but what we hear is massive. The sound of aging and being honest about it. Something you won't find often in Rock.
