75 to 85/100 (Just a folky, soulful, easy to listen to, pop album full of sad and atmospheric tunes to listen to while thinking about love and loss and stuff. Nothing radical or remotely groundbreaking, but it's still a really well-crafted album.)
This album is super easy listening. There isn't anything challenging or daring here. It's a set of acoustic pop songs mostly drenched in reverb and little synth atmospherics to make it all sound more dramatic and deeply felt than they otherwise would be. The songs are all slow, Bon Iver-esque heart on his sleeve sad romantic pieces designed to be listened to while swaying and thinking about some special someone.
The vocals are moderately soulful, sombre and love-sick. He isn't a powerhouse vocalist, but when the songs call for it he can hit them high notes with the express intention of making you close your eyes and let out a single solitary tear.
The production is, like I said, just atmospheric wide-open, reverb heavy and lush. It actually works really well to force you into a deep, ruminative state of mind.
This is not really a cool or edgy album in any way, but if I'm being honest I kinda love it. Like it a lot at the very least. The songs and every aspect of them is earnest, sad and gorgeous. I have listened to this 3 times now cuz I just want to listen to a somewhat sappy album like this sometimes. Sometimes I don't want to rage or smirk or put in a bunch of work to unravel all the deep meanings of music. Sometimes I just want to hear a beautiful and atmospheric pop album with some soul and some relatable love songs that I can listen to as I think about shit that ain't all that serious but is serious and sad and epic to me in my own little head. This is that kind of album for me and I recommend it especially for fans of maybe Dark Bird is Home-era Tallest Man On Earth, or that earnest somber vibe of Bon Iver.
