Quando Ry Cooder torna a fare dischi per così dire normali ( quindi non colonne sonore o collaborazioni con altri musicisti provenienti da diverse parti del mondo, per quanto poi queste collaborazioni siano riuscite… ) è un sollievo, si ha la certezza che un discreto livello lo raggiunge. In "Pull up some dust and sit down" torna ai temi già affrontati in gioventù dell'America rurale, povera e fiera della prima metà del secolo scorso ma, a differenza di quarant'anni fa, le canzoni che interpreta sono autografe, cosa strana per uno che ha fondato la sua carriera sul particolare modo di trattare la materia altrui.
