Rating metrics:
Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)
This album has a Bayesian average rating of 69.2/100, a mean average of 66.4/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 66.4/100. The standard deviation for this album is 15.4.

(Well crafted debut by this trio. Equal parts sophisticated and primal. Dynamic and rewarding album from start to finish. Highly recommended for fans of Dillinger or maybe Converge. Mathcore at its finest based off the limited exposure I’ve had to the genre.)
When initially I listened to this the midnight it released I knew right away it was a really solid album. I placed it on my chart somewhere in the 20s. I held off on giving thoughts on it and finalizing to some degree my ranking.
I listened again and I started picking up the nuances, the stirring emotion, the intricate yet never wankish song structures and rhythmic changes, and I was sold that this wasn’t just solid but really really good. I then moved it to 16 or so on this chart. Still, I was not really up to writing anything about it.
Today I listened to this debut album by this trio a couple more times. I am now struck by how dynamic the band is. The sound is never overly loud and insane and inaccessible to the point where it seems they are actively pushing new listeners away. And yet it is never overly familiar or stale or “accessible” in a directly attention-grabbing way. It walks a fine line. This album is extreme, and the rapid fire riffs and meter changes and vocal switch ups from feral scream to guttural growl, and the way the whole album flows from one moment of extreme despair to another moment nearly anthemic heavy punishing anger to brief moments of quiet and beautiful sadness, is awesome and a bit hard to fully take in on first listen. After today’s revelatory listens I have moved this type my top 10 of the year (this will change over time as the year is still young). I cannot deny that this pummeling and extremely intense Mathcore album is one of the most engrossing and start-to-finish SATISFYING albums I’ve heard this year. There isn’t a dull moment, a bad song or anything that seems unnecessary. It’s a well crafted, equal parts sophisticated and primal, dynamic and rewarding album from start to finish. Highly recommended for fans of Dillinger or maybe Converge.
