Rating metrics:
Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)
This album has a Bayesian average rating of 70.0/100, a mean average of 69.5/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 69.5/100. The standard deviation for this album is 20.1.

A fantastic and very underrated record. Features Will’s old friends Pajo, McMahan, Walford and Brashear of Slint fame, as well as Grant Barger and Paul Greenlaw. Its bare-bones, honest and raw songwriting is maybe not I See A Darkness great, but it’s a sign of what’s to come. Country, folk and occasionally rock ballads and slow tempo poems are the polar opposite of Spiderland, and yet every musician here seems to fit perfectly. Will Oldham wrote better songs and albums in the future, but this one should not be overlooked because of that. There Is No-One What Will Take Care Of You is great in its own right.
When I was but a wee bit of a lad, THIS is what I dreamed Country music sounded like. Austere, plaintive & naked coupled with a crazed spiritual fervor. You can imagine my horror when I found out it was nothing more than a NEUTERED version of the hard rock of my junior high school years. Luckily this bard-of-many-names dreamed the same dream. Whiskey would not taste quite so good without it.
but, there are few albums, never mind covers albums, that I’d choose over the spiritual descendent of Woody & Grahm. If one indie rock artist embodies the essence of Harry Smith’s immaculate Anthology of American Folk Music, it is Will Oldham. Few artists have come to the table with as mature and fully conceived of a debut as There is No-One What Will Take Care of You.
This is far too glum for me. Cmon, sing happy songs!
