Texas singer-songwriter Rodney Crowell was one of the more successful left-of-center singer-songwriters that emerged from the "great credibility scare" of the 1980s, many thanks to producer Tony Brown. Speaking of producing, Crowell was instrumental in producing records for ex-wife Rosanne Cash. His record Diamonds and Dirt yielded several successful singles, with great songwriting made assesible with familiar Beatles harmonies and rockabilly rhythms. Crowell was unable to sustain this winning formula, and he turned to deeply introspectiolve Americana music at the turn of the millennium.
On Triage, Crowell continues to move further down the hole of Moody instrospection. Crowell's lyrics will make you think, but countless downers with sparse production and few melodic hooks keeps the listener at a distance.
