Rating metrics:
Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)
This album is rated in the top 23% of all albums on BestEverAlbums.com. This album has a Bayesian average rating of 73.9/100, a mean average of 73.0/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 74.3/100. The standard deviation for this album is 11.8.

This album is one of the great releases of 2021. It’s the perfect symbiosis between electric and acoustic music and it features some amazing artists. My favorite song is ‚new auburn‘ with Anaïs Mitchell, but all the others are great too.
Decent mix of artists performing within the folk pop diaspora. Not too much of substance here for me. It's not bad but it's just ok. Would've preferred more Justin Vernon.
One of the best albums of 2021. Aaron Dessner's first major record putting his own story and songwriting at the forefront. An exploration of the ghosts we have. Beautiful.
I have a hot take... the 2 songs which did not feature Justin Vernon in ANY capacity are actually the 2 best songs on the album. Despite the other high profile guest artists Taylor Swift, Fleet Foxes, and Sharon Van Etten, I think Aaron Dessner shines when he's on lead vocals. Anaïs Mitchell's tracks are also great. I think I'd best describe this album as Folklore and I Am Easy to Find combined but with VERY heavy Justin Vernon influences. "The Ghost of Cincinnati" is a contender for my song of the year, but the album overall is good-not-great.
I think other than the 2 tracks which don't feature Vernon at all, this feels a lot more like a Bon Iver album than a National album. It's neither, but if this had been released as a Bon Iver album with Dessner producing and the same guest musicians, I think it would've easily fit with the Bon Iver repertoire. Vernon's bandmates S. Carey and Mike Lewis do feature on the album (as do Aaron Dessner's bandmates Bryce Dessner and Bryan Devendorf).
It's a lot of star talent, and while it doesn't necessarily live up to its potential, it does very well despite having too many cooks in the kitchen.
