Rating metrics:
Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)
This album has a Bayesian average rating of 72.3/100, a mean average of 72.0/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 72.0/100. The standard deviation for this album is 13.6.

Not bad by any means, just not my jam. Not a fan of either the soaring emotional evansescance-ish female vocals, and not a fan of Metalcore breakdowns which are here in plenty.
In the lead up to the release of this debut from spiritbox there was a lot of hype, especially on aoty and I guess I was always in a wait-and-see, "you best prove it" somewhat old grouchie bastard state-of-mind and so when I first heard it that night it dropped I wioll admit I was not of an open mind. I decided even then that it was pretty well executed and, for what they are attempting to do here, they are nailing their vision I think (how can I possibly know what is going on in their minds?). So I earmarked it tjo come back a second time and now I am finishing up a second listen. And my opinion is mostly the same. Just not emotionally connected to this sound and this style or these songs. maybe if I was more locked-in on what has been happening with metalcore since the dissolutiopn of myspace, I would be hearing all kinds of brilliant twists and subversions and developments and innovations of the sound and maybe this would be something that would blow me away. As it is, that not being the case, this is simply a good enough heavy album with to many soaring vocal parts and metalcore blastbeats and breakdowns for me to really enjoy.
