Although released a year previous This album followed on from my recent discovery of R.E.M.'s Murmur (this all happened in 1983). Can't remember where I first heard it but it blew me away at the time and still does every time I hear it.
Dream Syndicate was a natural progression from R.E.M. (Steve Wynn and Peter Buck have worked extensively together over the years), and led me into bands like Rain Parade, 28th Day, Green On Red, Game Theory and The Bangles.
This album is sprawling and messy and I love that. This type of post punk Rock N Roll (as a critic once described it) has an endearing quality for me. Ever changing and evolving.
In a way, and i only thought of this just recently, it set me up for my return to Neil Young (in 1989 with the release of Freedom) as the Paisley Underground bands drew influence from Big Star, Velvet Underground and an extensive nod to Neil Young & Crazy Horse.
A (debut) great album
First time listening to this album and it's already one of my favorites from the 80's, and I actually grew up in the 80s.

If your pseudo-music expert friends keep throwing around the term "Paisley Underground" and do not cite this album in their analysis, then it's time to call your pseudo-music expert friends on their BS!!! 1982's "The Days of Wine & Roses" would be situated at the top of my Paisley Underground list of all-time greats! Each of the nine songs featured on the album amble along in a seeming Heroin haze fresh off repeated trips with The Velvet Underground & Nico. Steve Wynn does a remarkably accurate impression of Lou Reed's long lost little brother, and his bandmates seem to be VU re-incarnated. An all-time favorite!!!

I love this group, just heard their live album, "Live at Raji's", good version of "Days of wine and roses"

This album is excellent...tragically overlooked masterpiece. Brilliantly played nuerotic postmodern psychedelic rock - a kind of bridge between Television and The Gun Club.
The Dream Syndicate constantly gets overlooked. That could be because their successive records were awful, or that they just ended up being a bit too obscure. Either way, Days of Wine and Roses is a solid rock landmark of alternative rock, whether anyone knows it or not.
