Hardcore troubadour Steve Earle has built up string of tribute albums. Earle followed up his 2009 tribute to Townes Van Zandt with a 2019 tribute to another Texas singer-songwriter named Guy Clark. The untimely death of Earle's son JT prompted another tribute.
Jerry Jeff is a spirited tribute to a wonderful songwriter. Walker's folk beginnings yielded songs like Mr Bojangles and My Old Man, while his move to Texas produced more laid back songs a-la Jimmy Buffet, like Charlie Dunn and Sangria Wine.
Earle's selections are primarily from Walker's debut album, titled Mr. Bojangles, as well as his 1972 self-titled album and his 1973 album Viva Terlingua. Earle pleasantly reminds the listener of Walker's charming compositions, chill and bittersweet, cheerful and tearful.
The songs are fairly live and straightforward and do not stray far from the sound of the originals. Earle especially outdoes himself on the sweeter songs like Little Bird and Wheels, an intriguing mid-tempo song that builds up to a nice climax.
