Rating metrics:
Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)
This album has a Bayesian average rating of 73.2/100, a mean average of 71.5/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 73.5/100. The standard deviation for this album is 15.7.

generally inconsistent and a bit boring, but has a good sound which exemplified on a few songs.

Some of John Darnielle's best songs in a while. All the lead singles for Bleed Out remain standouts, and a few more album tracks, namely Extraction Point, Guys on Every Corner, and Hostages are all well crafted pieces. The production in particular on Bleed Out is really well executed, with the band congregating at Sylvan Esso's studio in North Carolina, and helmed by Albini production alumni Anna Bognanno (Bully). One might find this high clarity, clean production style a little unfitting for Mountain Goats, but I think it allows his songwriting to shine through more cleanly (full respect though to the band's lo-fi origins). To rationalise: theres never anything especially radical happening instrumentally with Mountain Goats, it's all in the lyrics and delivery. A 4-track might help with "rawness," but the writing is more essential in accomplishing that and hearing it unencumbered – I feel – is where Darnielle has worked best. In any case, John is always writing the same batch of songs over and over, so if you like this shtick, Bleed Out will handily scratch that itch.
