Hmmm! Within Temptation will always put out a good record. But they all tend to sound the same. The only two that stand out for me are Mother Earth (for its songs) and The Heart Of Everything (for its production and songs).

So it's a little poppy -- but rather than taking symphonic metal and lowering it to run-of-the-mill pop standards, it takes pop and elevates it to new heights. This album is full of absolutely great music. A rare confluence of hummable and excellent!
I can understand the backlash directed toward this album: Within Temptation's fusion of 80s pop rock and 00s symphonic metal is now complete. Still, it's a collection of consistent songs with quite a few standout moments. It's a concept album, but the story - like most concept albums - is impenetrable. It is what it is. I think the overall body of songs here are good enough to make this one of the best releases of the past decade.
