Rating metrics:
Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. My album rating is for the first ten tracks only, as is on my original LP (that got thrashed in the 70's!). There were so many awesome party tracks on this album, some 40+ years later and I still can't sit still when playing it. I felt The Motors deserved an awful lot more success in the charts than they got. Real shame they only lasted 3 albums.
