You know that one-chord raga-sort-of-thing instrumental that Santana tacked on to the end of Black Magic Woman? That's Gypsy Queen, and it's a cover. The original is the last track on side one of this, Gabor Szabo's debut solo album. He'd been in Chico Hamilton's group for quite a while, and Chico Hamilton plays on this--you can hear Szabo has been influenced by Hamilton's melodic and eclectic cool jazz. He sings on his cover of Bang Bang, which is a little weird, but it's a friendly sort of bad singing, and it doesn't get in the way of a fun, tuneful, great album. His version of My Foolish Heart here is as good as Bill Evans's version on Waltz For Debbie, to my ears--I'm trying to tell you, this guy is exceptional.
