I re-listened to this today thinking it needed to fall a few places on my chart. I was wrong. Great album!

Justin Townes Earle is another artist whose albums fail to match the live performance. But whereas that usually means failing to capture high energy, in Earle's case, it's that they capture too much energy. When he performs, he always seems worn a bit thin, his songs dragging along, his voice ragged with overuse. And I swear that's part of his charm. This album gets pretty close to the live show (though it does have a couple of big Memphis-style tracks, and I still don't care for them).

Every single JTE album has been better than the one before.
JTE does Memphis soul. I was disappointed in this album at first, but it's grown on me. The songs are wonderful, but I still think they're a little better live--more soul, less mumbling.
