This band has picked up so much backlash over the years, and the generations who didn't grow up with them have never really accepted them. This album, their final masterpiece, and certainly not the "sell-out" many Gen X-ers claimed it to be back in the day, deserves a re-evaluation for the better.

The third-greatest shoegaze album of all time, but usually credited as the best. The last 5-star album for this year.

Never been a fan of Patrick Fitzgerald's singing style. The sound they made as a band, especially Julian Swales (the greatest shoegaze guitarist of all time), more than made up for it. "Drive That Fast" might be my single favorite song of the '90s.

I love this album, but on the other hand, I can absolutely hear why folks found it disappointing when it came out after their masterpiece EPs. "Catch the Breeze" - an EP track, thank you very much - is by far the best song here. They haven't played any of the rest of these cuts on their reunion tours, but "Celia's Dream" and "Primal" deserve revisiting.

The highlights here - "The Planetarium Scene," "Breezing Up," and "Ballerina Out of Control" - are as good or better as any cuts on the rock-solid debut, but it's a little more patchy.

Once again, I don't swoon over it as much as some folks, but it's still great. The last of the 4.5's for this year.
