Rating metrics: Help Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)

This album has a Bayesian average rating of 72.5/100, a mean average of 72.7/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 72.7/100. The standard deviation for this album is 12.6.

I initially overlooked this one; it was one I'd heard lots but never listened to. I feel as though because AAL hit their stride with Joy of Motion, this album was overshadowed, especially since they both try to achieve similar things.

But as it turns out it's a killer album of its own and has a lot of powerful and signature moments. The album is paced well and it climaxes epically in just the right spot. While a lot darker than self-titled, the melodic leads are more introspective, and they interplay really well with rhythmic sections, handing off focal duties as needed. The album certainly doesn't wear out its welcome, and each track provides something meaningful to the album as a whole.

A downside of the album is that some of the shreddier leads still feel a bit mindless.

Really good album to pick up if you've worn out their others. Maybe a challenging one if you aren't into them already.

Standout tracks: Odessa, Do Not Go Gently, Weightless (Edited)

I’ve noticed that a lot of progressive metal nowadays is just jazz guitar turned up really loud, especially instrumental progressive metal. That’s exactly what this is. This album is no different than a John McLaughlin or George Benson album, just turned up really loud. And it’s really good too. Guitarist Tosin Abasi has some real talent. I mean incredible talent and he shows it off here. This isn’t an album for the faint of heart, in fact I believe that this album was made for musicians to listen to, and jazz enthusiasts. But if you’re a fan of The Mars Volta or An Endless Sporadic, then this is an album for you. It can get a bit repetitive at times, but it’s good.

This is a very interesting album that combines heavy guitars and electronic music. This may sound dumb at first but they make it work amazingly. Definitely worth a listen.
