Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)
This album has a Bayesian average rating of 72.1/100, a mean average of 71.6/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 71.6/100. The standard deviation for this album is 14.8.

Not quite classic Cale, but I do think this album is an interesting experiment and is worth listening to if your a fan of John’s. The opening track is the best, really great, but after that there’s a little run of tracks that really aren’t too good before we get to the (almost) title track ‘Nookie Wood’ which is musically ok, but lyrically very interesting. After that we get some nice tracks, the best of which are ‘Mary’ and ‘Midnight Feast’ with the only lowpoint being ‘December Rain’, before ending on another interesting track, ‘Sandman’.
This album does have one major flaw however, one that ruins some tracks, and that flaw is the scourge on music that is autotune. Autotune is a tool that can be used to a musicians advantage, but Cale uses it in a rather unfortunate manner, dating the album more than his work from decades ago. Shame too, there is an amazing album in here somewhere.
