Rating metrics:
Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).

I love your comment about how u dont listen to much rock anymore. Me too. People always ask me why, and i say Simple. Because it fucking sucks!!!!! Today's rock is absolutely horrible, but who cares. There's electronic music.

I enjoy the choice of more etablished artists :D Yeah, I can see that after a while you aren't that surprised of new musical developments. Q-Tip sums it up best on A Tribe Called Quest's Excursions:
"You could find the Abstract listening to hip hop
My pops used to say, it reminded him of Bebop
I said, Well, daddy don't you know that things go in cycles
Way that Bobby Brown is just amping like Michael". And I think, every time, there is still something new added to the spectrum :)
