Rating metrics:
Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)
This album is rated in the top 7% of all albums on BestEverAlbums.com. This album has a Bayesian average rating of 75.6/100, a mean average of 77.5/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 77.5/100. The standard deviation for this album is 10.9.

Not a very ambitious album, made for bigger jazz audiences this time. A very easy album to digest even for a newcomer to this form of music. A fine combo, I love the vibraphone, as always. A recommended addition to every collection.
I absolutely love the tune Manha De Carnaval and this version of it is perfection, just beautiful. After that, I feel side 1 would have been MUCH better sequenced if tracks 2 and 3 were in reverse order, keeping the energy up and then dropping it down for the contemplative ballad at the end of the side. The way they did it, I think the energy drops too soon, so that it slumps and then suddenly zips back up for track 3. Sequencing makes a difference...oh well. The late Barry Harris plays piano on this, he became very famous as an educator and theorist, with a system based on the "Sixth Diminished Scale" which is all over YouTube, and way over my head. His playing here seems perfectly straightforward, tuneful and right in the smoky late-night vibe, part of why this is an album that can grow on you with repeated play.
