Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)
This album has a Bayesian average rating of 73.8/100, a mean average of 73.0/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 73.8/100. The standard deviation for this album is 16.0.

A great album, but not as consistent as their precious releases in my opinion. Much more popular however so it may appeal to your average alternative rock fan. Some really good tracks on here too.
I purchased this CD when it first came out in 1994 and recall not being particularly fussed about it. Some 25 years later , on the back of a new BR album I’ve revisited‘Stranger Than Fiction’ the band’s major label debut and what a joy it was. In these unstable times the messages of despair, political instability, fascism and rising up have never resonated so strongly. The power cords and shredding licks tie together a wonderful album
1994 was actually a hot year in music with seminal albums from Jeff Buckley , Green Day , Sued and Live dominating my musical world at the time so I can understand how this one passed me by. But no longer, it may have taken me 25 years but I corrected a clear wrong- ‘Stranger Than Fiction’ now sits among the years best albums
So far the best Bad Religion album I've heard. Much better than the previous ones. Much more varied, and very interesting lyrics.
Oh, and about the re-release of what became later their biggest hit, 21st Century Digital Boy, there's one good and one bad:
One bad: The original version is better.
One good: 22 years after, we're all 21st Century Digital Boys
Infected and 21st Century Digital Boy are singles KROQ introduced me to and I like them. Still not into the album though.
This is the album that first caught my attention. Stranger than Fiction is one of my favorite songs. Its a great listen start to finish.
