Etta James is a gutsy and versatile singer ranging across the styles popular at the turn of the decade: blues, R&B, doo-wop, gospel, jazz, and the emerging soul. After some success in the early 60s, though her work continued to attract critical attention, she stopped being popular, and by the late 70s she was struggling with drug addiction. She re-gained public attention in the 90s, largely due to a 1996 Pepsi advert. She has a long list of singers who admire and respect her singing, including Diana Ross, Janis Joplin, Mick Jagger, Joss Stone and Adele. This is a great album (Edited)

I've probably owned this record for 15 years but never got around to properly listening to it until after she died. I have to say the girl could sing. Love that voice. As for the record though...this is one of the biggest disappointments ever. The material is pretty darned dull.

I know this album well. Etta James can sing any kind of music she wants, and does it better than almost everyone. At Last has some really great moments on it. daCritic is right...you should hearthis.

One of the most perfect documents in the pop catalog. Simple pop songs made grand by Etta's voice and solid arrangements. And the title track, of course, is sublime.

Such a talent. Would have loved to hear more from her as this debut for Chess was her pinnacle. Personal woes got her career off track.
