Rating metrics: Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)

This album has a Bayesian average rating of 73.5/100, a mean average of 74.0/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 74.0/100. The standard deviation for this album is 13.4.

While most fans prefer Roth's first two solo albums to this one, this is actually my favorite Roth solo album.

"A Little Ain't Enough" (1991, US #18; UK #4) is, essentially, a blues/rock party album for fans that disliked the adventurous, majestic-sounding "Skyscraper."

It has aged well thanks to its bluesy base, and Bob Rock's relatively raw production - relative to the era in which it was recorded - but for David Lee Roth, "A Little Ain't Enough" is a downright conservative album that mines the same musical vein as Aerosmith's "Get A Grip," and classicist blues ideas, a la The Rolling Stones "Voodoo Lounge."

David Lee Roth doesn't completely forsake the genre-fusing that made Van Halen 'the great American band' of the late '70s - mid-'80s: "Drop In The Bucket" incorporates gospel and is the album's highlight, while "It's Showtime" has a boogie that makes "Hot For Teacher" sound comparatively sedate. That said, aside from these two songs, the title track, and the sarcastic blues of "Sensible Shoes," the other 2/3 of the album doesn't feature enough memorable moments or hooks.

"A Little Ain't Enough" being Roth's first inconsistent LP, changing musical trends, and 19 year-old guitar prodigy Jason Becker's ALS diagnosis - and subsequent inability to tour and record new music with David Lee Roth - hasted a popularity decline that sent Roth wandering through the musical wilderness for approximately a decade.
