This album appears to be largely (or at least partially) inspired by Colin Newman's 1981 LP, "Provisionally Entitled The Singing Fish." The first track is actually entitled "Fish Fourteen" (noting that "Provisionally Entitled The Singing Fish" consisted of thirteen tracks, entitled "Fish 1," "Fish 2," "Fish 3" and so on), so this is not a clever secret or just an obscure reference. The band's PR would have you believe they're also influenced by Yo La Tengo, Slowdive, Bedhead, and Galaxie 500, all of which are fair comparisons (except the Slowdive one), but I'm familiar with all of those bands too, and frankly, this whole album is more reminiscent of "Provisionally Entitled The Singing Fish" than any of them. Thankfully, "Provisionally Entitled The Singing Fish" is a good album. So, RIYL "Provisionally Entitled The Singing Fish."
